Hayt Students Go to Lane Tech!

The Hayt Caudill Book Club (CBC) traveled to Lane Tech High School. When we entered the auditorium, Lane Tech's own Jazz Band was playing for the audience. Lane Tech has some future musicians! After the welcoming ceremony, the assembly began. Many authors like Jodee Blanco, sat in front of our eyes. They talked about their experiences and hardships. Jodee Blanco had a very touching story about her High School days. I can't wait to read her book: Please Stop Laughing at Me!

After the assembly, we went upstairs to a library reserved for Hayt School! The Librarians passed out backpacks with books and a T-shirt in them. Then the CPS Librarian, Mrs. Rodriguez told us about Battle of the Books. She would read aloud 4 books to us and we had to listen very carefully. After she finished reading the books, we had a Battle of the Books Competition. The competition was playful, but tense. She would ask a question and we would have to be the first one to raise our hand and answer it. Finally we found out team 3 had won.

Mayor Daley's Spring Book Club Conference was a great success!

What do all of these titles relate to? Hayt's CAUDILL BOOK CLUB!

The Hayt School Caudill Book Club is a place for people who really enjoy reading books. The CBC recently visited Lane Tech High School as special guests during the 4th annual Mayor Daley Book Club meeting.

There was a Battle of the Books going on between different high schools. Battle of the Books is a contest where students try to read as many books as possible of 19 chosen annually for Mayor Daley's Book Club. The welcoming ceremony included greetings from Mayor Daley, remarks from Arne Duncan, and a keynote address from author Jodee Blanco.

Afterwards, we went to Lane Tech's library and met Mrs. Rodriugez, the head librarian of all the Chicago High Schools. She read aloud 4 books to us, and we had our own Battle of the Books. It was a lot fun and we all enjoyed it very much!

Who was Rebecca Caudill?

"Rebecca Caudill was a gentle, good-willed lady. People who knew her recall many heartwarming experiences. Her books are honest, and cross all geographic and social barriers.

Rebecca Caudill was born February 2, 1899, in Harlan County, Kentucky, deep in the Appalachian Mountains. She was one of ten children born to George and Susan Caudill, both teachers. At the age of five, she and her family moved to Tennessee. It was there, listening to students read poems and folktales aloud that Rebecca learned to love the art of storytelling. She learned plot and characterization, how stories were constructed, how they fit together."
